Former NBA player and current analyst Charles Barkley told Conan O’Brien how he lays down large tips when he’s out on the town, recounting how at one time he tipped a blackjack dealer $25,000.
Barkley, who played in the NBA from 1984 to 2000, was featured on the late-night show Conan, where he talked about his tipping behavior. He has stated that other NBA players are notoriously stingy, with Barkley having pointed out Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan as being particularly bad.
Still, Barkley has gained a reputation for being a very notorious tipper. He is big on giving fair amounts to those who work service positions for a living, and he was asked about it on O’Brien’s show.
Speaking about his tipping philosophy Barkley said, “I think it’s important when you’re successful. The waiters, the waitresses, the blackjack dealers. I think it’s important. They work extremely hard, they don’t get a great salary. I think the more successful you are, the more you should tip. I truly believe that.
“I’ve never went overboard. I’ve tipped $25,000 before. I won about $700,000, I was playing blackjack. I probably should have tipped more, to be honest. But I thought that was pretty generous because when you lose money, they don’t give you any back.”
Needless to say, there’s a reasonable chance that blackjack dealers are making sure they’re on the schedule should they know King Charles is coming to town.
